Preparations at Sunbeam

Here's an update I got this morning from Sunbeam.

Subject: Hurricane Dean


Hurricane Dean threatens to hit Jamaica by midday Sunday. It could become a category five hurricane by the time it the Island. Such a storm could cause considerable damage. The building is safe and all should be ok. Twenty seven boys are presently here at the home to brave the storm.

Preparation

Boys were informed, sufficient water was stored, two weeks supply of food. A safe and secure room (basement) was identified for all twenty eight boys and staff at the home, in addition to identifying the nearest emergency shelter (Spring Gardens All Age School).

Contact was made with the CDA representatives to inform them of our state of readiness. We obtain contact numbers from Mr. Bowen in case of emergencies. All staff members off duty were contacted to ensure they were doing fine. Mrs Lawrence (house mother) and myself remained on duty. Our families are safe, contact will be made by telephone as long as we are able to do so throughout the hurricane.

The twin home is also safe. However the grills are covered with plastic to prevent water from blowing in. Similarly the grills of the main building will be covered to prevent water blowing into the main hall.

Medical

The medical box was stocked with additional items that could become handy during and after a hurricane, these include the following: alcohol, DPH for fever and cold, cotton rolls, and bandages.

I have met with some of our neighbours that might have to be sheltered. They were pleased and promised to take up the offer should the need arise.
